An Action 52...FAN game?!
I should come right out and say I have a ROM of the infamous NES 52-in-1 compilation "Action 52", one of the most legendary bad games to have ever existed. I am planning (if I can ever get the time) to begin writing a review of Action 52 and all the games contained within it, in several parts. But, I recently found something that caught my eye...
Game #27 of Action 52 was "Nonbuman", a single-level side scrolling platformer game. In that game, you play as...umm...err...I'm not going to speculate WHAT you play as, but I can definitely say that it (he? she?) is non human for sure, so the title is accurate. Now while I think that not all of Action 52's games are godawful ideas and that some of the games have some potential and could have been good if developed more, Nonhuman is NOT one of those games. You'll find out my FULL opinion of that game when I get to reviewing Action 52, but I'll go ahead and say that Nonhuman is (in my opinion) probably one of the five worst games in the entire collection. So I was quite surprised when I discovered that someone...
...made a fangame/remake based on Nonhuman.
Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QczeK7apVg4
All I'll say is this: This looks ten times better than the real Nonhuman!

I really don't know what to call the character you play as in the game...I guess it kind of looks like a paper airplane with legs or something like that. A lot of "starring" Action 52 characters are hard to identify what they are, what a shock
And the big screaming green heads with purple glasses...I've got nothing to say on those, either! I've seen some reviewers say they look like Elton John or Bill Cosby or Ray Charles...I'll go out on a limb and say they look like Professor Farnsworth from Futurama on a heavy amount of acid
I actually was talking about when some TV shows back in the days had a computer game challenge for kids to phone up for and play on it, they would usually call out the commands for a character to walk streight, go left, go right, jump etc.
Oh, I think those kinds of challenges were before my time, sorry. I didn't really know about those.
One big problem with Action 52's platformers like Nonhuman is that all of them (save one) have a very awkward control scheme. You can't jump and move at the same time...I mean it. How do you jump across gaps? You have to STOP moving, jump, THEN move. How awkward is that?!
Yeah, that's exactly it. One of the programmers/music composers for Action 52 has actually come forward and revealed himself on the Internet. Basically three people made the Action 52 games. They were all college kids, They were basically given 3 months to make 52 games. Plus they were all fired by Active Enterprises (the company that made A52) before the project was completed...no wonder Action 52 turned out to be rather ugly...
You do have to admit it took a lot of gall and courage for that guy who actually worked on Action 52 to come forward and reveal himself to the Internet world. How would you like to say your claim to fame was working on THAT? Really took a lot of bravery for that guy to come forward on Youtube. I'm aware that there's always the possibility that this guy is lying, but since he commented on quite a few of the songs from Action 52 games (go figure, someone uploaded the entire soundtrack) saying that he wrote them and how he wrote some of them, told more about the actual Active Enterprises than anyone I've ever seen, and actually uploaded a video of an unaired Action 52 commercial starring the Cheetahmen that he said Active Enterprises gave him a copy of, I'm tempted to believe him.
That guy must have really been brave, or he didn't care much about the reputation of the game and just thought to himself, well I might as well come clean and say I helped make that pile of Cheetah...well you know.
I'd say that guy was pretty brave. He was actually asked if he composed the theme to Cheetahmen since that theme has become pretty popular on the Internet, but he said he could not remember for sure. He did list a few games he did some work on (Bubblegum Rosie was one of them-he mentioned that he named that game for his then-girlfriend and current wife), and also mentioned that the three of them who programmed Action 52 had no prior programming experience and were musicians by trade. It really does show, since in many cases in Action 52 the music is better than the games themselves He also mentioned (if I recall) that one of the other two programmers was blind. I believe he als
As I said, Action 52 was a complete trainwreck, but in my upcoming review I will highlight games I think had some potential and could have been really good if worked on more. There are definitely a few (about 15 or so) I can think of in there. Nonhuman, the game I showed here, is definitely not one of them. In fact it's in my opinion, one of Action 52's five WORST games...it's #4 on my bottom 5 list. (Just to spoil things a bit, the full list is: 5. Game #37, Mash Man, 4. Game #27, Nonhuman, 3. Game #47, Hambo's Adventures, 2. Game #44, Manchester, and 1. Game #24, Micro Mike...you'll see my full opinions on those games in the review). It's coming tomorrow!
Well, sadly, some people don't have patience, and clearly Active Enterprises didn't have any. They just wanted fame instantly and thought they were going to get it, it seems. Well...in a screwed up way, they were right! They DID get that fame, just not likely the kind they wanted to get...
Thought I'd go ahead and mention Action 52 has the honor of having the most BORING game I've ever played in my life. That game would be game #8, Jupiter Scope (which I'm sad to say is one of the games I've gotten quite good at playing, for the most part). It's a stationary space shooter game in which you control a rocket ship that is basically trying to defend a city from meteors falling on it. That's all you do in the game. All you do. There's no punishment for you missing any...so what is the point, really? You'll really see what I mean about it being boring when I actually fully review that game...probably the only reason I stuck with that game through about level 5 was the fact that I actually liked that game's music...
There's no hurry or anything to review all 52 games, if you can stand that. I'll find it worthwhile though to review other games, like last night I played Quiz of Dragons on my PSP. :D
A part of me would like to review other, much better games, but for the most part, I think it's more fun to highlight the more...questionable games out there. I might be a little crazy, but in a odd way, it's more fun to tear something apart that thoroughly deserves it than it is to praise something. If that makes any sense...
I might as well also give a quick shoutout to what I think is the best game on the entire Action 52 cartridge...and no, it is not Cheetahmen. Cheetahmen is definitely one of the better and more fully realized games among the collection (understandable since it was supposed to be Active Enterprises' magnum opus), but it's not the one I "liked" the best. That one would be game #21, Streemerz (what a silly name). It's a game in which you use streamers to climb up to the top of the tower while avoiding evil clowns...oh, and did I mention, in this game you play as a CLOWN. Yes, really. It's a very stupid concept for a game, but yet, somehow, the game manages to somehow actually be FUN. To me at least (and to quite a few other people who've reviewed Action 52). Now who would have thought a game starring a clown using streamers would be the most fun game on the cartridge? I didn't...but I'm playing it as I write it and I'm actually sort of having fun with it, so I guess somehow I actually like this one...
As for the review, I think I'll be posting part one tomorrow...I'll be writing half of it tonight and the other half tomorrow. Yes, I am a bad procrastinator and I need to get better about that
